Natural
Cities
The term 'Natural Cities' refer
to: ''spatially clustered geographic
events, such as the agglomerated patches aggregated from individual
social media users’ locations.'' (Jiang & Miao, 2015). To derive
natural cities in the USA we used data from the
former location based social media Brightkite. These
individual check-in points were converted in a Triangulated
Irregular Network (TIN). The smaller than average triangles were
categorized as natural cities. The result is a map of the natural
cities in the United stated in 2008 (figure 12). Next to this map, an
animation of the development of Natural Cities in the USA is added to this
page (figure 13).
